Cornelius Holding 9/11 Remembrance
Cornelius will mark the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks with its annual Remembrance Ceremony on Friday, hosted by Cornelius-Lemley Fire Rescue, Cornelius Police and the Town of Cornelius.
The ceremony begins at 8:30 a.m. at Fire Station #1, 19729 S. Main St.
Lt. Andrew Woodall of Cornelius-Lemley will open the program, followed by a performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” by Vanessa Corrigan.
The ceremony will mark each major moment of the 2001 attacks with a bell toll and a moment of silence, beginning at 8:46 a.m. — the time American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Cornelius-Lemley Chaplain Kyle Graham will offer a prayer, followed by a performance of “Taps.”
Additional bell tolls will mark the 9:03 a.m. crash of United Airlines Flight 175 into the South Tower, the 9:37 a.m. crash of American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon, the 9:59 a.m. collapse of the South Tower, the 10:03 a.m. crash of United Airlines Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and the 10:28 a.m. collapse of the North Tower.
Speakers will include Cornelius Fire Chief Guerry Barbee; the Rev. Dr. Dan Pezet of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church; retired Mecklenburg County Chief Fire Marshal Ted Panagiotopoulos; and Cornelius Mayor Denis Bilodeau.
The ceremony’s final bell tolls also serve to memorialize North Carolina firefighters, emergency medical workers and police officers who have died in the line of duty.
Woodall will deliver closing remarks, and Graham will close the ceremony with a prayer.
Organizers said that parking at Fire Station #1 is limited. Additional parking will be available at Mt. Zion Church on Zion Street, across the railroad tracks from the fire station, with a shuttle running between the two locations throughout the ceremony.
