Sept. 16. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will swear in a new chief of police today. Jonathan Thomas, a North Carolina native, will take the oath of office during a 1 p.m. ceremony at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center.
Thomas began his law enforcement career with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department in 1998. He earned a degree in criminal justice from UNC Charlotte and an MBA from Pfeiffer University. He also earned a master’s certification in law enforcement administration from the University of Virginia and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.
At CMPD, Thomas served in various leadership roles, including special operations and emergency management, and in the department’s efforts in western North Carolina following Hurricane Helene.
