CMS on 2-hour delay; watch for black ice tonight

Brinkley was slick around noon

Dec. 10. 4:45 pm. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will open on a 2-hour delay Tuesday, a big sign that things are getting back to normal after a historic December snowfall.

CMS will dismiss in the afternoon at normal times.

Lakeside Charter Academy will close for the day as well as Community School of Davidson.

Whether driving or meeting appointments, allow extra time. Some areas have not been thoroughly cleared.

A winter weather advisory is in effect until 10 am Tuesday. Slushy and/or icy spots may remain, especially in shady areas. Temps will drop to 24 degrees and conditions could be hazardous tomorrow morning after wet road surfaces refreeze, causing black ice.

Aquesta, a major local employer, is playing it by ear tomorrow, and may delay opening. “We want to make sure our employees are safe when traveling tomorrow morning,” a spokesperson said.

There’s no word on whether Republic Services will resume trash pick-up Tuesday. It was cancelled today.

If you must travel tonight, use extra caution and practice the following tips for safe winter driving:

—Reduce speed and allow extra time to reach your destination.

—Be aware of potentially icy areas such as bridges, overpasses, hills, ramps, and shady spots.

—Keep a safe distance (recommend at least five seconds separation) behind other vehicles and snow removal equipment.

The weather outside isn’t exactly frightful: The National Weather Service says Tuesday will be sunny, with a high near 44. Tomorrow night will be clear, with a low around 24.

No rain until around 3 am Friday.
