Atrium announces medical school location in mid-town Charlotte

March 24. Atrium Health announced it will build a four-year medical school in conjunction with Wake Forest Baptist Health and Wake Forest University on 20 acres at the newly engineered intersection Baxter Street and South McDowell in Charlotte.

The facility will open in 2024.

Atrium Health officially combined with Wake Forest Baptist, including the Wake Forest School of Medicine, last year. The partnership is bringing the medical school to Charlotte.

The first-year class will have 48 students, but each of four classes is expected to grow to 100 students.

Atrium Health’s flagship hospital, Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center, is in Charlotte near Dilworth.

Gene Woods, CEO of Atrium, said the new site is a 10-minute walk from CMS.
