Take the Work out of Fall Decorating

The trend of outsourcing exterior holiday decorating is expanding into October, with a new seasonal business bringing a luxury twist to fall displays.

Cornelius-based Pumpking offers what it calls a “white-glove fall porch experience,” handling everything from selecting and delivering pumpkins to designing and installing displays at homes and businesses. The company returns after the season to remove the pumpkins and says it works with North Carolina farms to responsibly repurpose them.

Customers can choose from four residential packages ranging from $350 to $950. Packages vary in the number and types of pumpkins, gourds and other fall decorations included, with delivery, installation and removal included.

“Everyone loves fall and we really enjoy the family aspect of Halloween,” owner Scott Keefer said. “Something like this just gives people a really easy way for their home and neighborhood to look nice during the long fall season.”

The business is targeting homeowners who want elaborate fall displays without the work of purchasing, transporting and arranging pumpkins. Customers can select a package or submit a photo of their porch, as well as photos of other displays or inspiration, to create a customized look.

Pumpking also offers larger custom installations with its Pumpkin Wonderland service, which starts at $2,500. The service is also available to homeowners associations, with a promised charitable donation, as well as shopping centers, banks, parks, town halls, clubhouses and other community spaces.

All pumpkins are sourced from North Carolina farms and are returned at the end of the season to be used as livestock feed and compost.

Keefer founded Pumpking last year, drawing on his background in event experiences and brand building. He developed the concept after seeing a similar business during a visit to Texas. His wife, Carole Keefer, helped launch the company. She operates an international yoga retreat business, Freespirited Wanderer.

Pumpking began taking orders Sunday and, with a strong retention rate from last year, is expecting to reach maximum capacity this season.
