Intersection of West Catawba and Nantz Road

By Dave Vieser — A temporary fix to a malfunctioning traffic signal at Nantz Road should help ease recent traffic backups on West Catawba Avenue between Jetton and Westmoreland roads, according to town officials.

The traffic signal at West Catawba Avenue and Nantz Road has been operating on a timed cycle for months after road sensors were damaged during construction work at the intersection, officials said.

Timed signals are generally less efficient because they cannot adjust to changing traffic volumes throughout the day. Motorists say the result has been significant backups, particularly for southbound traffic on West Catawba Avenue.

Cornelius Deputy Town Manager Wayne Herron said NCDOT completed a temporary fix last week but added that “a permanent fix is up to the private contractor.”

The signal currently controls traffic on West Catawba Avenue and Nantz Road and eventually will regulate traffic entering and exiting the Nantz Road extension, as well as a planned convenience store.

West Catawba Avenue is a state-maintained road.
