By Dave Vieser — It’s several years later than originally planned, but construction at the Alexander Farms project has become highly visible, with the first of 142 senior citizen units at The Manor expected to be occupied by the end of summer 2027.

The timing of development for the nearby retail section remains less certain, though River Rock said interest has increased. Pre-leasing is expected to begin this summer, with move-ins expected in mid-2027, said a company official.

“At the heart of the development will be The Manor, a multistory 55+ active adult rental community, designed for residents seeking a vibrant, maintenance-free lifestyle with access to a full suite of amenities,” according to Dan Hughes, co-founder of River Rock Capital Partners. “We also have a medical office building planned as a key anchor for the project.”

As for the retail section, Hughes said, “Interest in the retail component has been strong, and we are actively working with prospective tenants. While we cannot yet announce specific retailers or medical tenants, we look forward to sharing more information as agreements are finalized.”

As motorists have no doubt noticed, the area encompassing the northeast corner of Westmoreland Road and West Catawba Avenue is filled with construction vehicles working on a number of projects.

In addition to The Manor, N.C. Department of Transportation crews are building a roundabout that will accommodate traffic where Westmoreland Road and a newly extended Northcross Drive will eventually connect. The same project will also add lanes to handle traffic in the area.

Work is also expected to begin soon on a new urgent care facility to be built by Novant Health. The facility will be separate from the medical office building planned near The Manor.
