Popular Walking Path Closed for Construction

The multiuse path connecting the McDowell Creek Greenway and neighborhoods along Westmoreland Avenue to West Catawba Avenue is closed because of road construction.

The closure extends from the Westmoreland Athletic Complex, known as WAC, to the main entrance of the Alexander Chase neighborhood.

A spokesperson with the N.C. Department of Transportation said the walkway “should open once the roundabout is built, right now expected to be around Thanksgiving.”

NCDOT has posted a detour through Alexander Chase for pedestrians traveling west. The route runs through the neighborhood, crosses the construction area and connects to the rear of WAC and the Robbins Park neighborhood.

No detour signs are posted for pedestrians traveling east on Westmoreland Road. However, the detour can be accessed by walking through the rear of the WAC parking lot and crossing Eagle Ridge Way Lane. That WAC route is also accessible through the Robbins Park multiuse paths.

On Wednesday, an NCDOT spokesperson said engineers were walking the detour route to finalize detour signage.

The NCDOT project includes construction of the Northcross Extension to Eagle Ridge Way Lane and a new roundabout on Westmoreland Road. The full project is expected to be completed in 2027.
