Sewage Spill on the Peninsula
Approximately 200 gallons of wastewater spilled into Lake Norman on Tuesday from a property on the Peninsula, according to Charlotte Water.
Charlotte Water reported that a pipe failure near 17005 Belle Isle Drive in Cornelius caused the overflow. The address is next to a construction site at the corner of Belle Isle Drive and Carlow Road.
“A majority of wastewater overflows can be prevented with your help,” said Cam Coley, spokesperson at Charlotte Water. “Anything put in plumbing or a manhole can cause wastewater overflows, spilling raw sewage into your street, your creek, or even inside your own home. Even products labeled as flushable do not break down in the sewer system and can contribute to clogging.”
Charlotte Mecklenburg Storm Water Services, which monitors water quality, has not yet issued a swim advisory for the area.
