Hough Spring Roundup: Week Five
By Benson Stubbs — With spring break next week and most teams taking the coming week off, here is our weekly roundup of scores and statistics for the Hough Huskies spring sports season.
Hough baseball: The Huskies went 3-1 this week to improve to 11-5 overall and 3-1 in conference play. The team beat South Mecklenburg 9-7, Apex Friendship 8-2 and South Iredell 13-6, but lost to Providence 12-2. The Huskies return to action April 15 against conference opponent Myers Park.
Boys tennis: Hough defeated Garinger 9-0 on Tuesday. The Huskies are 5-3 overall and 4-1 in conference play. They have won 33 of 63 individual matches this season. Scores from Thursday’s matchup against South Mecklenburg were not reported and the team hosts Myers Park on April 14.
Boys volleyball: Hough beat Marvin Ridge in straight sets by scores of 25-22, 28-26 and 25-22. The Huskies, 9-2 on the season, return to action April 14 against MCA.
Girls flag football: Hough extended its win streak with a 25-0 victory over Garinger at home. The Huskies play again April 17 against Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology, which recently defeated Charlotte Catholic 47-0.
Girls soccer: The Huskies went 2-1 last week, defeating South Mecklenburg 5-2 on March 27 and Mallard Creek 9-0, and falling to Ardrey Kell 1-0. Hough did not allow a shot on goal against Mallard Creek. The Huskies are second in the Greater Charlotte 7A/8A standings behind Myers Park and travel to face the Mustangs on April 14.
Softball: Hough went 2-2 last week. The Huskies lost 8-1 at Weddington, then defeated Palisades 11-0 and Ardrey Kell 2-0 before falling 13-8 at Porter Ridge on April 1. Junior Aubrey Martin drove in the lone run against Weddington. Senior Payton Elwell hit home runs in consecutive games against Ardrey Kell and Porter Ridge, giving her three this season. Hough returns April 14 against Garinger in a conference matchup.
Boys lacrosse: Hough suffered losses this week against Christ School and Cardinal Gibbons by scores of 9-5 and 10-6, respectively, and needed three overtimes to post a 10-9 win over Foothill (CA). The 8-3 Huskies, which lost their spot as the top ranked team in the state with the two losses, head east next week during spring break to take on Ashley and Croatan.
Girls lacrosse: The Huskies fell to 4-2 on the season with their lone game of the week a 18-15 loss to Davidson Day. The girls are off next week for spring break and don’t play again until April 14 against Christ the King.
Fall Sports
The Carolina Panthers announced the lineup for the 2026 Keep Pounding High School Classic, with Hough receiving marquee billing in an evening matchup against Cardinal Gibbons. Hough is the defending 8A state champion and Cardinal Gibbons is a mainstay in the state’s top ten rankings. The game will be Saturday, August 29 with kickoff at 8 p.m. General admission tickets are $8.
