By Dave Vieser — A new, larger ABC store with expanded parking is planned for Cornelius at Catawba Commons, a retail and office complex under development on the north side of West Catawba Avenue, just east of Aldi. Site preparation is underway.

The town’s Architectural Review Board will review and provide recommendations on conceptual elevations at its Feb. 26 meeting.

“Catawba Commons was approved in 2024,” stated Senior Town Planner Aaron Tucker. “Two buildings were approved as part of the complex, and the rear building, comprising 13,400 square feet, is proposed as the location for the new ABC store.”

The current ABC store is on Statesville Road, just south of Catawba Avenue. Parking is limited, and access has become more difficult during construction of the Highway 21 twin roundabouts.

At Thursday’s meeting, planners will present building elevations and contextual renderings showing the proposed architecture for the front building of Catawba Commons.

The meeting begins at noon at Town Hall and is open to the public. ARB meetings generally do not include a public comment period.
