Oct. 9. Monday, Oct. 13, is the final day to submit an application to serve on the proposed Metropolitan Public Transportation Authority (MPTA), which would be formed if the 1% sales tax increase referendum passes on November’s ballot. The MPTA would finance, operate and maintain the public transportation system for its service area.
Members of the MPTA would be appointed by the government bodies impacted by the proposed transportation initiative. The towns of Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville, Matthews, Mint Hill and Pineville would each receive one seat on the board. Mecklenburg County would get six seats, and the three remaining seats would be appointed by the state Senate, House and governor’s office.
Applicants must reside in Mecklenburg County to be eligible for the county seats or his or her respective town to qualify for a town seat.
The online application for one of the county seats is located here. The application window for the seat in Cornelius has closed, according to town officials.
