Cornelius police officer dies in biking accident

Officer Gabriel Stainback

Sept. 15. Cornelius police officer Gabriel Stainback passed away on Saturday in Concord after being struck by a car while on a bike ride with his wife. Stainback, a recent graduate of High Point University, was hired by the Cornelius Police Department as a cadet late last year.

The department said Stainback went through the Basic Law Enforcement Training and joined the force in December 2024. In college he was a two-time Big South champion in the decathlon and the Concord native was recently married. No additional information was provided about the accident.

“Our deepest condolences are with his family and our entire CPD family,” wrote the department in a Facebook post on Saturday. “Please keep them in your thoughts during this unimaginable tragedy.”
