Tillis spoke at a Newsmakers Breakfast in 2023
June 30. With all eyes turned to who might replace US Sen. Thom Tillis in the Republican primary in 2026, a top Democrat took time to praise the former NC Speaker of the House on Sunday.
Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, Ph.D. (NC-12) said she wanted to “commend Sen. Thom Tillis for his courage and commitment in doing the right thing for our country.”

She served with Tillis in the North Carolina House.
Background
Tillis on Sunday announced he won’t run for re-election in 2026, after pressure from President Trump over Tillis’ opposition to the “big beautiful bill.” Tillis voted against starting debate Saturday night. He also said he would oppose the final version.
President Trump said he’d meet with Tillis’ challengers, one of whom may be his own daughter-in-law, Lara Trump.
Quotable
“Sen. Tillis’s voting against the procedural vote was a teachable moment to our youth about the importance of putting country before yourself,” Adams said.
Tillis, his staff and family have been subject to safety threats, harassment, and intimidation in recent years.
Glad to hear he is standing up for his beliefs and our country, one of the few these days!
