Rendering of Cashmere proposal

June 10. By Dave Vieser. At their June 9 meeting, the Cornelius Planning Board concurred with the town planning staff, recommending zoning approval for the Cashmere condominium/mixed use building but at a height of three stories, not six.

The project is proposed for a vacant lot on the northwest corner of Jetton Road extension and Bethel Church Road.

The applicants, Adam and Iryna Jones, had filed the required rezoning paperwork asking for a six-story project, called Cashmere, and changing the zoning from Village Center to Conditional. However, a majority of planning board members took exception to the height, as did town planners and  three of the four speakers at the hearing.

Stan Ott, who lives on Daymark Drive near the proposed building site, said the project would be “completely out of character with the neighborhood.”

Taking a contrary view, David Judge, also from Cornelius, expressed concern that if the town doesn’t vote approval “we will be turning away a well planned project.”

After discussion, the board voted to go along with the staff recommendation of approval with a three-story height maximum.

The recommendation will now go to the Town Board for a public hearing and final decision at a date to be determined.
