April 25. With Lincoln County’s expected withdrawal from the Lake Norman Marine Commission effective June 30, it looks like the half-century old commission will dissolve in the midst of the fight to halt the spread of lyngbya as well as greater efforts to regulate the boat charter business.
What replaces the LNMC remains to be seen. It was established in 1969 to include Lincoln, Catawba, Iredell and Mecklenburg counties and has regulatory authority over matters relating to or affecting public recreation and water safety.
In a letter, LNMC Commissioner John Johnson said that a “back room” group involving legislative efforts to replace the Lake Norman Marine Commission would result in less safety on the lake.

Johnson
“Bottom line, 2024 was the safest year on the lake in quite a while,” Johnson, a Cornelius resident, said in a letter.
“The current revision [of] the ‘workgroup’ draft, if enacted, would result in a reduction in public safety on Lake Norman. The Lake Norman Marine Commission cannot endorse such an approach that does not include citizen input or public comment,” Johnson said.
I have reported on the inaccuracies of this commission for at least the last 4 years. I have contacted all 3 local news media and asked for an interview to discuss, none followed thru with my requests. Finally, the end is near, these guys brought this demise on themselves due to a slanted, authoritarian view of how (THEY) wanted boating to be conducted on lake Norman. As a professional, licensed master captain, I demand to know who is conducting an (Illegal Charter) on the waters of Lake Norman under NCGS 75A?? Good riddance and BE GONE!! Capt. Andy Lake Norman NC
This is a back door group for SE Lake Norman from Special People that got their feeling hurt because illegal group could not get a permit for an outing not with en the regulation.
Also some to the special group could not get their weeds treat due funding a proper permits on Lake Norman.
If this happens it will be the end of proper safety on Lake Norman by a Non-Polital group fo stake wholeder one for each of the four counties with enforcement on Lake Norman.
Special group will try to form new commision of SE side of the lake that got their feeling hurt because the LNMC would not do it their way.
None of the stake holdere understands what’s about to happen. It will turn the Wild Wild West on the South end to an open sewer.
LNMC has a bill in place to make all requlation in GS codes with ALL LOEs can enforce.
Tis is a move to stop this from happening and the reply “We Got to Have a GS”
A few LNMC were told best play ball or else.
Or else is wjhats coming. Don’t let this happen
