June 9. While the Cornelius tax rate will likely remain the same next year under the proposed budget, there will be a 5 percent rate hike for the 4,000 customers of ElectriCities.
The Cornelius Town Board is the governing board of the town’s electric utility. Each year, when the town adopts its general fund budget, it also reviews and approves the budget for ElectriCities.
The driving force behind the rate increase is the construction of a new $5.3 million substation. Additional smaller capital improvements to the system will also add to the need for higher rates. Rate increases will be phased in over the next several years.
ElectriCities primarily serves the area east of I-77 in Cornelius, while Energy United and Duke Energy primarily serve the area west of the interstate. The rates between the three utilities have been fairly comparable over the past decade.
Does the town have any influence on Nat Gas prices. Piedmont/Duke is charging 50% more to customers on the west side of I-77 than what customers are paying on the east side of 77 with Endbridge, another gas company.
