Jazz Festival is Saturday

Cool sounds coming Saturday

The Cornelius Jazz Festival—a fundraiser for Smithville CommUNITY Coalition and Send-A-Kid-To-Camp—is this Saturday at Smithville Park, 19710 S. Ferry Street. Bands on deck include Holly Hopkins Jazz, Dante Lewis, Shableek and Shades of Brown.

The free event, which gets under way at 5 pm, includes local artisans, food trucks, craft beer and wine and children’s activities. Bring blankets and lawn chairs.

The weather looks good: The National Weather Service is calling for a mostly sunny day, with a high near 86. Saturday night will be partly cloudy, with a low around 65.

Smithville Park anchors one of the oldest communities in Cornelius, with roots dating back to the 1880s.

The Smithville CommUNITY Coalition was formed in 2011 and is made up of residents, area citizens, non-profits and faith-based communities. Their vision is to revitalize and transform their community into a vibrant, safe and attractive place to live and work that builds pride in its residents and attracts new developments of affordable homes and businesses, focusing on empowering all individuals and strengthening families.

Food and beverage vendors range from A Worthy Dog to Yoshi’s. Beer and wine will be available as well.

There will be free shuttle service beginning at 5 pm from Cornelius Elementary School. Glass containers are not allowed. This is a no-smoking event, which includes e-cigs. No pets, tents or open flames.
