Search continues for 20-year-old

June 19. Local rescue and emergency response teams continued to search the waters of Lake Norman near the NC 150 bridge for a possible 20-year-old drowning victim.

“Our search is ongoing for a male out with friends who jumped in the water with no life jacket on Sunday June 14, around 2:30 pm,” said NC Wildlife Officer MW Lee.

If this verifies as a drowning, it will be third in Lake Norman this year. In all cases, the victims were not wearing life jackets.

On Thursday afternoon June 18, units from the area fire departments and sheriffs office were seen combing the area. Lee said the name and address of the possible victim was being with held pending notification of next of kin and family.

The Red Cross has this advice for swimmers:

Enter the water feet first
Enter unknown/shallow water cautiously
Dive only when marked as safe for diving
Don’t enter the water from a height
Do not drink
Pay attention
Swim with a buddy
