Feb. 17 The Peninsula Community Foundation has made three grants totaling $20,000 to The Ada Jenkins Center, Discovery Place Kids Huntersville and the YMCA Starfish Program. The foundation also elected new officers: Todd Wiebusch, president; Jean Bock, vice president; Gip Bonar, treasurer; and Andrea Griffin, secretary. New board members include Laura Engel and Wendy Hershey. |

Feb. 16 Cornelius Police are looking for a red compact car that was seen leaving the Cornelius Village Apartments on Meridian Street early this morning. At 2:49 am Thursday police responded to reports of multiple gun shots. Witnesses saw a small red car leaving the scene. Detectives discovered four occupied apartments were struck by stray bullets, but no one was injured. Officers have increased patrol around the apartments which are at 19317 Meridian. Cornelius Police are asking anyone with information to contact the North Meck Crime Stoppers at 704-896-7867. You can remain anonymous. |

Warrior Dash: Run amok legally at Rural Hill Aug. 27-28

Nurture your inner warrior by participating in the "Warrior Dash" Aug. 27-28 at Rural Hill. The two-day extreme event already has more than 12,000 registered attendees and is expected to climb as high as 14,000.
The event is expected to generate an estimated $3.2 Million in visitor spending to the Lake Norman region, according to the Lake Norman Convention and Visitors Bureau, also known as Visit Lake Norman.
Well-known for grueling terrains and obstacles, the Warrior Dash presents extreme runners with wild competition. Those participating in the Warrior Dash at Rural Hill will endure 3.08 miles of extreme environments and 11 intense obstacles.
Participants are encouraged to suit up in their best Warrior attire and receive fuzzy Warrior helmets prior to racing. Turkey legs and other Warrior grub will be available for purchase. Spectators are welcome at Rural Hill to enjoy the live music playing throughout the day, watch the Warriors tackle the obstacles near the finish line and participate in other activities on site.
VLN first heard of Warrior Dash when Travis Dancy, VLN's sports marketing manager attended the National Association of Sports Commissions (NASC) Market Segment Meeting in Colorado Springs last September. After researching the event and assessing the inventory of possible sites in the three towns of North Mecklenburg, VLN met with Red Frog Events, the owner and operator of the Warrior Dash. Rural Hill was an ideal venue for the event, and VLN provided a financial commitment tied to the utilization of Cornelius, Davidson and Huntersville hotel rooms. MARCH 3-4 GYMNASTICS The "Everest Classic," a two-day girls gymnastic competition, is March 3-4 at Hough High School. Put on by Visit Lake Norman, Everest Gymnastics Training Center and Cornelius PARC, the event is expected to bring hundreds of young gymnasts from across the country. In honor of Black History Month, the Cornelius PARC Department is hosting "Celebrate Smithville" at Town Hall from 1-4 pm Saturday Feb. 25. Smithville is one the oldest communities in Cornelius, dating back to the 1880s. It will feature singing and dancing performances by local groups, children’s activities, community memorabilia and pictures, art by local artist James Donaldson and light refreshments. The event is free and open to the public. The Smithville CommUNITY Coalition is partnering with the PARC Department. The coalition was formed last year and is made up of residents, non-profits and faith-based communities. Their vision is to revitalize and transform their community into a vibrant, safe and attractive place to live and work that builds pride in its residents and attracts new developments of affordable homes and businesses, focusing on empowering all individuals and strengthening families. |
