The Lake Norman Kiwanis will hold its annual pancake breakfast 8 a.m. to noon March 3 at First Baptist Church in Huntersville. There will be entertainment and a silent auction. Feb. 17 The Peninsula Community Foundation has made three grants totaling $20,000 to The Ada Jenkins Center, Discovery Place Kids Huntersville and the YMCA Starfish Program. The foundation also elected new officers: Todd Wiebusch, president; Jean Bock, vice president; Gip Bonar, treasurer; and Andrea Griffin, secretary. New board members include Laura Engel and Wendy Hershey. |

Feb. 17 The ICE Gala benefiting the Ada Jenkins Center is March 3 at Davidson College. Feb. 16 Cornelius Police are looking for a red compact car that was seen leaving the Cornelius Village Apartments on Meridian Street early this morning. At 2:49 am Thursday police responded to reports of multiple gun shots. Witnesses saw a small red car leaving the scene. Detectives discovered four occupied apartments were struck by stray bullets, but no one was injured. Officers have increased patrol around the apartments which are at 19317 Meridian. Cornelius Police are asking anyone with information to contact the North Meck Crime Stoppers at 704-896-7867. You can remain anonymous. |

Mrs. Iona Bass Perry, 85
Mrs. Iona Bass Perry of Huntersville, NC, went home to be with the Lord on February 14, 2012 surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Sampson County, NC on January 23, 1927, the daughter of the late Reddin B. and Lillie Averitt Bass who moved their large family to Durham, NC when she was very young and that is where she lived, married James Faison Perry and had five children. Mr. and Mrs. Perry moved to Charlotte, NC in 1969.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 17, 2012 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of Raymer-Kepner Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00-2:00 at the funeral home.
Mrs. Perry is survived by her husband of 68 years, James Faison Perry. Theirs was a bond of love that survived the test of time and he took care of her until her last breath on Valentines Day. Also surviving are their five children, three daughters, Sheila Smith and her husband Graham of Lake Norman, NC, Gwen Sexton and her husband Larry of Harrisburg, NC, and Gayla Harris and her husband Joseph of Cornelius, NC; two sons, James Faison Perry, Jr. and his wife Dorothy of Smithfield, VA, and Kenneth Perry and his wife Jeanette of Gastonia, NC; one sister; Mrs. Faye Maynor of Lynchburg, VA, nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Along with her parents she was preceded in death by three brothers and six sisters.
Mrs. Perry loved her family enormously and was blessed with a very strong Christian faith that guided her through life. With her husband Faison, they raised five children. She was a wonderful Mother, and excellent cook who always had a wonderful meal on the table. When she wasn’t working outside the home or in her kitchen you could find her outside gardening and caring for her flowers. She took great pride in creating a lovely home and garden in each place she lived. People passing by her home would slow down to view her flowers. She loved having her family together and had family members bring their guitars for sing-alongs. In earlier years she enjoyed round dancing with her husband. She had a great sense of humor and would throw her head back with a laugh that would make you smile. She never met a stranger and would spend time talking with everyone she came in contact with. She was a memorable lady that heaven will welcome with open arms.

MARCH 3-4 GYMNASTICS The "Everest Classic," a two-day girls gymnastic competition, is March 3-4 at Hough High School. Put on by Visit Lake Norman, Everest Gymnastics Training Center and Cornelius PARC, the event is expected to bring hundreds of young gymnasts from across the country. In honor of Black History Month, the Cornelius PARC Department is hosting "Celebrate Smithville" at Town Hall from 1-4 pm Saturday Feb. 25. Smithville is one the oldest communities in Cornelius, dating back to the 1880s. It will feature singing and dancing performances by local groups, children’s activities, community memorabilia and pictures, art by local artist James Donaldson and light refreshments. The event is free and open to the public. The Smithville CommUNITY Coalition is partnering with the PARC Department. The coalition was formed last year and is made up of residents, non-profits and faith-based communities. Their vision is to revitalize and transform their community into a vibrant, safe and attractive place to live and work that builds pride in its residents and attracts new developments of affordable homes and businesses, focusing on empowering all individuals and strengthening families. |

The Lake Norman Lucky Cats program is a 501(c)3 non-profit that was started out of necessity. Back in the 1990s Lucky Cats founder Abigail Jennings became aware of a colony of 19 feral cats in the woods behind the then-new Lake Norman Realty building on West Catawba Avenue. |
